A Few Tips For When Your Aluminum Door Isn't Closing Properly

Having a door that won't close properly can be more than a nuisance. It can let air flow from inside to out and vice versa. This can cause your heating and cooling bills to climb and also be unsafe for small children or animals. There are a few things you can do yourself to try to fix the situation you should try before calling an aluminum door repair technician. It is best if you can have a second person there to help hold the door or frame as you work on them and check that they are level and square.

Check that the Door is Square

Often the problem is that the door has shifted and no longer sits in the frame squarely. The easiest way to check this is to prop the door open and check all the sides with a level. If any side is off, tighten the screws at the top and bottom of that side. If this makes it worse, loosen the same screws until the side is square again. Be sure to check all the sides and the top and bottom rails because the problem may be with more than one area.

Check that the Frame is Square

If the door itself is square the problem may be with the frame. With the door still open, check the frame with the level. To square the frame, you will need to loosen the screws all the way around it. Lightly shift the frame a bit at a time, checking in between shifts to see how you need to make any further adjustments. Once you have the entire frame square you can retighten the screws. Close the door and check that it is closing properly.

Adjust the Pneumatic Opener

Sometimes the door and frame are square but the problem is with the opener. There is a screw on the opener that can be adjusted to pull the door tighter or loosened if the problem is that the door is being pulled too far into the frame.

After performing the above, if the door will still not close the way it should, you may want to contact an aluminum door repair technician. If while attempting to fix the problem you notice that the door or frame is broken it might be better to replace the whole thing. This should be done by someone experienced in aluminum door repair and installation or you may end up having to start all over. For more information, contact a company like Caplan Bros Inc.
